The glamorous Galt

As Louisville, Kentucky's only waterfront hotel, the legendary Galt House Hotel provides convenient access to entertainment venues, museums, theaters, and distilleries. The 1,310 guestrooms, suites, and residences are reflective of Louisville's energy, excitement, and contemporary spirit.

Originally opened in 1835, the Galt House Hotel was built on the site where Dr. W.C. Galt once lived. Dr. Galt was a well-known physician and botanist back in the day.

As history has recorded, on January 11, 1865, the Galt House Hotel began burning and was “entirely in ruins” by 3:30am. Two lives were lost, and the cause of the fire remains a mystery.

Designed by architect Henry Whitestone, the second Galt House Hotel was built in 1869 just a block away from the original hotel and cost a mere $1.5 million. However, in the early 20th century, many businesses were moving away from the riverfront which decreased traffic to the area; thus hotel revenue dwindled causing the second Galt House Hotel to close its doors in 1919.

Thankfully, local developer Al J. Schneider envisioned a thriving business district near the waterfront which included an expansive convention hotel. The third Galt House Hotel opened in 1972 with only a single tower of guestrooms. Then, in 1984, due to increasing demand, a second tower was opened and consisted mostly of suite rooms which would provide guests the additional comfort they were seeking.

Vision comes to life

After three decades of operation, it was time for the Galt House Hotel towers to undergo a major renovation. Starting in 2018, Bryan Ashley worked hand-in-hand with Swope Design Group to bring to life the retro vibe the ownership company was searching for. Their vision of "Legendary Louisville" came to life through the use of various textures and materials. A moodiness was created in the lobby, bars, and restaurants; while guestrooms were designed with lighter and brighter colors creating a classic, clean environment. The abundance of upholstered seating throughout the property showcases bold, rich fabrics with button tufting and trim nail details. The spacious bathrooms feature vanities that craftily blend quartz tops with metal bases and are accented with beautiful art and classic mirrors.
